Blood Feud: The Clintons vs. the Obamas Hardcover – June 23, 2014
Author: Visit ‘s Edward Klein Page ID: 1621573133

From the Inside Flap

The Clintons and the Obamas…
…it’s more than a political rivalry, it’s a Blood Feud

They are allies by circumstance, rivals in fact, and enemies by personal animosity. New York Times bestselling author Edward Klein pulls back the veil on the most unreported story in Washington—the jealousy and antipathy that divides the two most powerful Democratic families in the country.

With unparalleled reporting and access to the most sensitive sources close to the principals, Klein gives an insider’s, behind the scenes view of the mutual loathing between the Democratic standard-bearers.

In Blood Feud, you’ll learn:

  • Why Michelle Obama’s political ambitions could rival Hillary Clinton’s
  • About the “deal”: why Bill Clinton supported Barack Obama for reelection—and why he feels betrayed
  • Benghazi: how Barack Obama set up Hillary Clinton to take the blame
  • How the one—and only—White House dinner between the Obamas and the Clintons was fraught with tension and contempt
  • The Oprah factor: how she was used by the Obamas—and stroked by the Clintons
  • How not just Bill and Hillary, but Barack and Michelle, lead largely separate lives
  • The power behind the president—it’s not Michelle, but her best friend who sets the administration’s policies and personnel
  • The secret Hillary Clinton is keeping that could make it impossible for her to be president

Jaw-dropping in its revelations, compulsively readable in the famous Klein style, Blood Feud will be the most talked about political book of the year.

The two lead families of the Democratic Party hate each other. Edward Klein documents why and how in this entertaining and fast moving book. It’s a good political beach read.

It’s mostly about three elections: that of 2008, where Barack Obama came from behind to knock off front-runner Hillary Clinton for the nomination, with charges and countercharges of race-card-playing in the South Carolina primary; 2012, where Bill Clinton made a whizbang nominating speech for someone he can’t stand and Hillary drank the Kool-Aid in agreeing to lie about Benghazi – `it was a spontaneous riot caused by a video’ – to seal Obama’s reelection; and the 2016 election, where Obama promised Clinton he’d support Hillary in exchange for their carrying his water, then reneged on it.

There are tons of details and fly-on-the-wall accounts of conversations. The Clintons come off much better than the Obamas do. We know most of the Clintons’ dirt already and, as a nation, don’t seem to care too much, but meanwhile they seem to have a clue about how to run the country, while the Obamas don’t. Barack Obama comes off as narcissistic, lazy, and shielded from reality by advisor Valerie Jarrett, effectively the shadow president since 2009.

I get the feeling the Clintons shrewdly used this book to get their version of events into play. Klein found leakers near the Obamas who are unhappy with them, but many Clinton sources appear to be lifelong friends seemingly given the green light to talk for this book – people who wouldn’t jeopardize their relationship to do so. And for many of the quotations, there would be no question in the Clintons’ minds who had given them – people party to conversations where only one or two others were present.
Edward Klein writes a great story. His writing, his reporting, is impeccable. His sources seem to be very credible. Of course, we all remember conversations slightly different than they were and in each person who does the telling the story seems to grow like a tornado in Kansas. But the original intent seldom changes. And facts are checked.

This book is a page-turner. I seldom pay much attention to the stories of politicians because they’re all so shallow and egotistical and such experienced psychological lairs. But this book is not written "by" a politician but by a skilled and, hopefully, objective reporter. One of the first things we’re taught in journalism school is to be objective. Unfortunately, however, people don’t seem to be learning that anymore. I think Klein still maintains that vital journalistic skill.

Everything in the book has already been leaked or reviewed here. I won’t repeat all that. All I’ll say is that it’s an eye-opener. I’d heard some of the stories before and suspected many more. With politicians, you’re not dealing with normal people. Power is the coin of the realm to them — the only currency they know or care about.

I personally do not like the Clintons nor do I like the Obamas. Nor for that matter do I like many on the other side of the isle. I dislike politicians equally and without bias or regard to party or anything else. Frankly, I liked the Clintons and the Obamas even less after reading this delightful book.

The egos of the two Clintons and the two Obamas are unbelievable. They all four feel entitled. That, I think, is at the center of this book. The feeling of utter entitlement coupled with childish fears and insecurities that make them close to pathological people ill fit to lead.

About the Author

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was an English mathematician, photographer, and prolific writer, especially known for his beloved books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Preferring the company of children to adults, his Alice books were inspired by his friendship with the young Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, where Carroll was a mathematics instructor.

Andrea D’Aquino has always resisted labels like “art director”, “illustrator”, “graphic designer” and finds herself happiest straddling the line between all those things. She has worked as a senior art director for major advertising agencies.

As an illustrator and designer, clients include Anthropologie, The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveller, The Washington Post, Elle Magazine, One Kings Lane, Vegetarian Times, Family Fun, Chronicle Books, Uppercase, Flow Magazine, PlanSponsor Magazine, and many others.

Her work has been recognized by Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, Art Director’s Club, Communication Arts, 3×3 Magazine, The One Club, and The Type Director’s Club.

In this 150th anniversary year, I have seen a few re-illustrated volumes of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This is the first one that made me want to own it for the artwork alone! Andrea’s Alice is so contemporary and modern… she is someone I would want as a friend. The scenes are lush and wondrous. I honestly don’t know how the Andrea was able to get past the blank page–to re-imagine Tenniel’s iconic work must have been nerve-wracking. And yet she succeeded spectacularly. I’m not totally impartial, I have been a fan of Andrea’s art for some time. But my review is sincere: this is a keepsake edition, well made from the artwork to the paper and binding.

Inventive, colorful illustrations with a surreal sense of visual humor and adult wit entertain and inspire us to reflect on the profound Lewis Carroll nonsensical (or is it?) dialogue that asks nothing less than the bigger questions of life and it’s meaning.Somehow, very familiar scenes are re-imagined and refresh this classic text. An unstudied, child-like freshness comes through each page, with unexpected takes on the characters that lets us see them in a new light. Appropriate for kids, but aimed at grown-ups, with a wink to those with a sophisticated sensibility.

This graphic illlustrated classic is a true wonder! It is a beautiful book from the inside out. Starting with the cover, you are drawn into Alice’s wonderland in a cool modern, abstract and thought provoking manner. The poems are just wonderful and the illustrations punctuate the fabulous story. I loved reading this classic with the iconic artwork of Andrea D’Aquino. I am thrilled to have this on my bookshelf !
