Like many others, I stuck with this series because I like to see the end. Maybe I am simply too old to be reading a YA series, but overall I feel rather frustrated by the overall storyline because it had the potential to be amazing and it never got there.

The world and concept these authors created is gorgeous. I kept reading because I loved imagining the ceremonies, the schools, the high council, Nyx and the Otherworld. The main characters were sweet and likeable, especially Zoey.

Here is where the series fell short for me:
1. Stark. He feels too vanilla for a gifted fledgleing/vampire such as Zoey.
2. Neferet: She is worthy of the reader’s sympathy yet she never evolves, I hoped she would also find redemption. She was a victim of darkness and with the reference to Damocles’ sword I had hoped to see the good in Neferet struggle with the need to use darkness to reach her status as a goddess. She ended on a very one dimensional note – I would have preferred to have read about the "nerd herd" discovering the conflict between Neferet and the white bull and using it to fuel her undoing. As Zoey is supposed to be our main protagonist I can see why this didn’t happen but that would have felt right.
3. Zoey’s immaturity. Her coming into herself as a vampire with extraordinary powers was one of the aspects of this series that drew me in, but in many ways she remained a child. And trying to pronounce "psaghetti" in my head made me feel like I needed special psychiatric meds. Just sayin’.
4. Aphrodite: her language was offensive and her drug and alcohol problem disturbing. I don’t think those elements were necessary to the story.
5.
