As a faithful reader of Lauren Fleshman’s blog, I always find her insights into running perceptive, instructive and inspirational. I’m also a high school coach, and have incorporated some of her ideas into the team handbook. Her training journal continues this tradition. Take her explanation of goals, in the section dedicated to dealing with adversity, on page 137 " ..the main reason for setting goals is not to achieve them. It’s like plugging a destination into a navigation system; it helps you to identify a trajectory for moving through the world. Your goal puts you on a path to interact with certain types of people and to set up your life in a certain kind of way…Make a goal, but loosen your death grip on it…With a journey driven approach, you’ll find more peace in the process…This is an invaluable insight for a high school coach. Runners at the high school level invariably overestimate their capabilities and when they fail to achieve, they can be disappointed, discouraged, devastated. I wish I had this insight (much) earlier. But there is much more. Her menu of workouts on page 58, supplies 13 terrific workouts that can be tailored to any level of fitness. Any coach of high school girls will also welcome her advice on "A New Way To Think About Body Image" on page 106.
There is much more, but I encourage Lauren to write a more complete book about running. A compilation of all her thoughts and advice that has appeared on her blog would make a major contribution to the sport. She is a gifted writer, with insights that transcend sport and reading her prose has made me a much better coach and a better person. And that’s what sport is suppose to do, isn’t it?
Absolutely one of the best tools any runner (or athlete!) new or seasoned can have. It gives you tons of tips and advice but ultimately leaves it up to you to map out your own fitness journey. What are your goals? Why are those your goals? What are you going to do to get there? Then there are weekly items to focus on. Love it. This is my 4th week using it and it has really helped me see what I have been doing and where I need to step it up to meet my goals. Will buy over and over again!
This is a perfect training journal for any level runner – I’m training for my first ever half-marathon, and I bought this because I wanted to be inspired every day to get up and train. I love this journal too because it’s pretty free form – you can write what you want, what you feel is most important about that day, etc. It’s also interspersed with "worksheets" and different inspirational passages.
You can really tell a lot of thought and heart went into the making of this journal…I’m excited to be using a product made by women for women!
