Review

”An enlightening account detailing how the Civil War changed the nation’s capital while expanding the role of women in politics, health care, education, and social services.” —Kirkus Reviews

From the Back Cover

Cokie Roberts, author of three New York Times bestsellers, including Founding Mothers and Ladies of Liberty, turns her attention to the Civil War in a riveting exploration of the ways in which the conflict transformed not only the lives of women in Washington, D.C., but also the city itself. Her engrossing, well-researched narrative is an inspiring work about increIDg independence and political empowerment, honoring the indispensable role of Washington, D.C.'s women in strengthening the city while keeping the lines of communication open with their Southern sisters, and in facilitating healing once the fighting was done. Compelling social history at its best, Capital Dames concludes that the war not only changed Washington; it also forever changed the role of women in American society.

CAPITAL DAMES presents an exciting narrative of U.S. events in Washington, D.C., around the time of the Civil War. Even though the focus of the book is Washington women, the author does a good job of reminding the reader of various important events at that time. I had forgotten, for instance, that Abraham Lincoln had actually been defeated at one time in a run for the US Senate.

I found the historical references especially interesting. I am reminded of how young are nation really is – especially the western part of America. For example, in describing a sea voyage to San Francisco, the author describes that city as only having "three or four regularly built houses," and that there were only sixteen women in all of San Francisco society.

Cokie describes some events which are similarly hard to imagine today. In the famous debates between Douglas and Lincoln, the author notes that "The combatants remained cordial," with Abe and Douglas’s wife, Adele "even enjoying a train ride together on the way from one debate to the next." It’s hard to imagine the contenders for U.S. president being chummy, with the wife of one taking a train ride with her husband’s opponent. (However, I am reminded of two young congressmen–JFK and Richard Nixon, sharing a train car when they were young politicians.) Another historical curiosity mentioned is the infamous raid of John Brown on Harpers Ferry. Probably most readers do not realize that the army officer who captured Brown was none other than Robert E Lee–a colonel at the time.

The author sets the stage for the reader by describing the panicky and hostile environment in Washington around the time Lincoln was elected president.
Posted first to Blog Critics as Book Review: ‘Capital Dames,’ A Glance at the Women of the Civil War by Cokie Roberts.

The Civil War was a time in history where women were finding their own allegiances, a time of war and treason, heartache and treachery. The Years of 1848-1968 were defining years both for the emancipation of slavery but for the women who chose their own involvement in working for their beliefs and that of their husbands and families.

In Capital Dames by Cokie Roberts we are taken into the parlors and the Whitehouse during a time when unrest was at its height. We are introduced to the women behind the great names in the histories of the colonies, and educated as to the real lives that were led by the men and their leading ladies.

Whether they were the communicators, the spies or the informers, each had a strong belief in what they were doing. We meet the First Lady of the White House, as well as the belles of both the north and the south. There is an amazing array of information gleaned from writing, diaries and news of the time and Cokie has taken the opportunity to shine a light on the women behind the history of the Civil war.

What I enjoyed about this particular telling is that Roberts tells the history as it unfolds, not just the woman, but also the men as they too play their part in history. While the emphasis is on the woman, it is the history and the making of it that seems to be the guide. I have always been interested in history and yet found myself in awe by some of the happenings. Many I did not know, and do not recall coming up in history lessons in school.

As a faithful reader of Lauren Fleshman’s blog, I always find her insights into running perceptive, instructive and inspirational. I’m also a high school coach, and have incorporated some of her ideas into the team handbook. Her training journal continues this tradition. Take her explanation of goals, in the section dedicated to dealing with adversity, on page 137 " ..the main reason for setting goals is not to achieve them. It’s like plugging a destination into a navigation system; it helps you to identify a trajectory for moving through the world. Your goal puts you on a path to interact with certain types of people and to set up your life in a certain kind of way…Make a goal, but loosen your death grip on it…With a journey driven approach, you’ll find more peace in the process…This is an invaluable insight for a high school coach. Runners at the high school level invariably overestimate their capabilities and when they fail to achieve, they can be disappointed, discouraged, devastated. I wish I had this insight (much) earlier. But there is much more. Her menu of workouts on page 58, supplies 13 terrific workouts that can be tailored to any level of fitness. Any coach of high school girls will also welcome her advice on "A New Way To Think About Body Image" on page 106.
There is much more, but I encourage Lauren to write a more complete book about running. A compilation of all her thoughts and advice that has appeared on her blog would make a major contribution to the sport. She is a gifted writer, with insights that transcend sport and reading her prose has made me a much better coach and a better person. And that’s what sport is suppose to do, isn’t it?

Absolutely one of the best tools any runner (or athlete!) new or seasoned can have. It gives you tons of tips and advice but ultimately leaves it up to you to map out your own fitness journey. What are your goals? Why are those your goals? What are you going to do to get there? Then there are weekly items to focus on. Love it. This is my 4th week using it and it has really helped me see what I have been doing and where I need to step it up to meet my goals. Will buy over and over again!

This is a perfect training journal for any level runner – I’m training for my first ever half-marathon, and I bought this because I wanted to be inspired every day to get up and train. I love this journal too because it’s pretty free form – you can write what you want, what you feel is most important about that day, etc. It’s also interspersed with "worksheets" and different inspirational passages.
You can really tell a lot of thought and heart went into the making of this journal…I’m excited to be using a product made by women for women!

Like many others, I stuck with this series because I like to see the end. Maybe I am simply too old to be reading a YA series, but overall I feel rather frustrated by the overall storyline because it had the potential to be amazing and it never got there.

The world and concept these authors created is gorgeous. I kept reading because I loved imagining the ceremonies, the schools, the high council, Nyx and the Otherworld. The main characters were sweet and likeable, especially Zoey.

Here is where the series fell short for me:
1. Stark. He feels too vanilla for a gifted fledgleing/vampire such as Zoey.
2. Neferet: She is worthy of the reader’s sympathy yet she never evolves, I hoped she would also find redemption. She was a victim of darkness and with the reference to Damocles’ sword I had hoped to see the good in Neferet struggle with the need to use darkness to reach her status as a goddess. She ended on a very one dimensional note – I would have preferred to have read about the "nerd herd" discovering the conflict between Neferet and the white bull and using it to fuel her undoing. As Zoey is supposed to be our main protagonist I can see why this didn’t happen but that would have felt right.
3. Zoey’s immaturity. Her coming into herself as a vampire with extraordinary powers was one of the aspects of this series that drew me in, but in many ways she remained a child. And trying to pronounce "psaghetti" in my head made me feel like I needed special psychiatric meds. Just sayin’.
4. Aphrodite: her language was offensive and her drug and alcohol problem disturbing. I don’t think those elements were necessary to the story.

Throughout my college experience, I have often been disappointed by the lackluster caliber and quality of most text books. However, whilst studying from the text book "Psychology" by Sandra Ciccarelli, an entirely different learning experience has occurred. Throughout the book, a combination of text and illustrations merge to form an immensely enlightening experience. Each picture is adeptly illustrating a key concept of their section, and gives background details on many of the major experiments prevalent in the breakthroughs of psychology. Furthermore, through Ciccarelli’s ability to simplify concepts towards an introductory level, it helped introduce key concepts and foster interest in the content for the reader. As I studied from the material, each simple theme of the chapter received its own individual section. Through this thorough approach, it gives the reader a change to digest the information and create a vastly superior knowledge of the material versus other rushed text book. Finally, by defining key words on the side of the textbook, it helps lethargic readers quickly study for a test without having to adopt a hunt and find methodism. Through these various techniques, Ciccarelli creates an insightful and ingeniously formatted text book that suits both curious learners and lazy students.

Had to buy as new in order to get code for lab work; however, the code did not provide required access. Student had to the pay an additional amount of money which was substantial. Although book arrived immediately and in new condition (in order to gain access to lab student must buy new book) this is a major rip off. All students had to pay again for lab!!!

I used this textbook for my general psych class. I liked this textbook and thought it was very easy to navigate. It flows nicely and has good visuals. I hope my school continues to use this author’s work, as it is very well-organized and made it easy to study for tests.

Overall, I liked this textbook and think others would, too. From what I gather, they have come out with a new edition. I’m not sure how different the two are, but if this edition is any indication of what we can expect from the author, the new edition should be just as good.

From the Back Cover

Discover the nine keys that can unlock your pathway to dramatic healing.

Kelly Turner, Ph.D., a researcher and psychotherapist who specializes in integrative oncology, gives the reader the results of her research on over a thousand cases of Radical Remission—people who have defied a serious or even terminal cancer diagnosis with a complete reversal of the disease. The results of this study, which focused on seventy-five factors, include astounding insights of the nine key factors that Dr. Turner found among nearly every Radical Remission survivor she has studied and an explanation of how the reader can put these practices to work in his or her own life.

Every chapter of Radical Remission includes dramatic stories of survivors' journeys back to wellness. The realization that the possibilities for healing are more abundant than we had previously known gives people concrete ways to defy the overwhelming prognosis of terminal cancer. This is a book for those who are in the midst of receiving conventional cancer treatment, who are looking for other options because that treatment has done all that it can, or who seemingly have no options left but still feel that the future holds the possibility of hope.

Kelly Turner's Radical Remission shows that it is possible to triumph over cancer, even in situations that seem hopeless. Encompassing diet, stress, emotions, spirituality, and other factors that profoundly affect our health and well-being, Turner's discussion of how our choices can cause the seemingly miraculous to happen will open your eyes to what is possible when it comes to lasting healing.

As the author of the book "The Doctor Who Cures Cancer," I believe "Radical Remissions is a big step forward towards creating critical mass.

Turner points out in her book that not one doctor she asked who had personally witnessed a Radical Remission had tried to publish the case as a classic case study. She also points out that there are over 1,000 reports of "spontaneous remissions" that have been reported in the medical literature, but that they weren’t being pursued by researchers as to the commonalities among them. Turner has done that!

She asked the right questions, "Why did each of these people experience a spontaneous remission? What it spontaneous or was it something they did?" She found out that their remissions were due to something they did.

Turner also highlights how it is by focusing on the anomalies that new discoveries are made. Whether it be Dr. Revici’s discoveries, the discovery of penicillin, etc, it is almost always in the exceptional case where the discovery is made.

The book then goes forth to expand on the 9 biggest commonalities that she uncovered so that cancer patients can try them for themselves.

Turner continues to collect more cases to help verify her findings. In her book, she calls her findings a hypothesis. She wants to see more attention devoted to her data to confirm and expand her findings.

We can be sure that the cancer industry will close ranks and not follow through on Turner’s goal just as they have for the past 100 years. But the book and her continued mission is a GIGANTIC step towards greater awareness about the real ways to cure cancer.

As someone who is always interested in alternative remedies outside of medicine, I purchased this book in hopes to learn more about the subject. The book was so much more than I expected in that not only was it well researched, but was written in such a way that it did not feel like an academic reading. Highly recommend.

I was diagnosed at 39 with stage IV, ER/PR+, HER2/neu – breast cancer which was found through a bone biopsy of my T5 vertebra. Though I did some western medicine treatments (lumpectomy, radiation to T5, complete hysterectomy, drug to strengthen my bones, and antihormone therapy, I also incorportated a lot of natural means to my healing. I am happy to say I have been in complete remission since May 2013! When I started reading this book, I was amazed at the 9 common things radical remssion survivors were doing because I was, and still am, doing the SAME things! This is a must read for anyone touched by cancer because we don’t have to stay narrow minded to western medicine and endure all of the damage and side effects that go along with western treatment. I appreciate Dr. Turner for her research and this book because now those of us that are doing things against the "norm" are being heard and there is proof that you can fight cancer without chemotherapy and/or surgery or you can adopt other ways with minimal western treatment as I did.

The Farthest Shore – September 11, 2012 PDF

The Farthest Shore (Earthsea Cycle) Hardcover – September 11, 2012
Author: Visit ‘s Ursula K. Le Guin Page ID: 1442459921

Review

“New and longtime Earthsea fans will be drawn to these impressive new editions.” (The Horn Book)

From the Publisher

Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea cycle has become one of the best-loved fantasies of our time. The windswept world of Earthsea is one of the greatest creations in all fantasy literature, frequently compared with J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth or C.S. Lewis’ Narnia. The magnificent saga begins with A Wizard Of Earthsea, continues in The Tombs Of Atuan and The Farthest Shore, and concludes with Tehanu –each book a treasure of wisdom, wonder, and literary wizardry. The magic had gone out of the world. All over Earthsea the mages had forgotten their spells, the springs of wizardry were running dry. Ged, Dragonlord and Archmage, set out with Arren, a highborn young prince, to seek the source of the darkness. This is the tale of their harrowing journey beyond the shores of death to heal a wounded land.

LeGuin’s third book in her Earthsea series is her most ambitious. Her thesis: you can only become whole by facing and accepting death, the darkest shadow. Lifted straight from Jungian psychology, this is the hardest and the important part of being whole. Sparrowhawk knows most of this truth already: remember the climax to Wizard of Earthsea. Arren, the young prince who accompanies Sparrowhawk on the epic voyages of this third book, has not yet learned this harsh lesson.
You don’t need to know anything about Carl Jung to read and enjoy this book. At one level, this is a children’s tale. But this book has many levels. Consider: the last king, Maharrion, had prophesied that there would be no king to succeed him until one appeared who had crossed the farthest shore. I’m not giving anything away by telling you that the farthest shore is physical – the western shore of the westernmost isle of Earthsea and metaphysical – death. And readers of earlier books know that for the wizards of Earthasea, there is a low stone fence that separates the living from the dead.
There is another wizard – humiliated by a younger Sparrowhawk – who has both great power and a terror of death. And he has worked a spell that will devastate the world, by denying and avoiding death. But by denying death, he has denied life, and magic, song, joy, reason and even life are draining out of the world. That spell must be undone before it is too late. And that task falls to Sparowhawk and Arren.
Arren must learn to understand and accept that death is necessary. Not just in the abstract but personally. He must cross that low stonewall with no hope of returning. He must cross the final shore.
This story has dragons, despair, joy, loss, discovery and marvelous surprises.

I don’t generally like books with happiness in the title. They tend to be trying to tell me how I can be happy, or otherwise they’re so vague and new-age that I wonder whether the author is for real. This book was very different.

This book is practical, very well written, and genuine in its approach. It doesn’t make grandiose claims. Instead, it is based on a very solid theoretical and empirical foundation, yet it doesn’t get caught up in unnecessary jargon. It’s also a great example of how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy can be applied to every day life. The importance it places on living a life that you value is excellent, and avoids many of the pitfalls of the contemporary cultural assumption that happiness (or lack of unhappiness) is the goal of self-help/life.

People who will find this book most helpful:
– Anyone who suffers from depression or anxiety
– Anyone who wants to be happy, but always fails to achieve it
– Anyone who wants to learn about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
– Anyone who struggles with their thoughts/thinks too much.
– Anyone who’s seeking to grow

According to the Declaration of Independence, the "pursuit of happiness" is one of our "inalienable rights." As Russ Harris masterfully points out in this book, however, the pursuit of values over the long haul, rather than happiness, is more likely to lead to a full and meaningful life. The overall approach within the book is based upon acceptance and commitment therapy or ACT, which has increIDgly been shown to be helpful in alleviating a wide range of human suffering. Rather than being a stodgy, stuffy presentation of ACT (and believe me, having written some of those myself – I know one when I see one!), the book reads more like a series of short stories which Dr. Harris presents in a conversational and engaging style to ilustrate how all of us can adopt a more kind and compassionate approach to our struggles with self-doubts, unwanted emotions, and worrisome thoughts. Indeed, the book could have just as easily been entitled "ACT for Dummies" not because it oversimplifies the approach, but because it makes it so accessible, understandable, and easy to apply. If you’ve heard about ACT and would like to know more about it, or have never heard of it, but want to check out what all the fuss is about, this is the place to start. I highly recommend the book to not only those of us who have fallen into the "happiness trap," but also to our friends, loved ones, and mental health professionals who have tried to liberate us from it. It can be usefully read and applied by itself or as an introduction to ACT before moving on to workbooks in the area such as "Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life." Don’t wait for the movie!

I recommend this book to all my clients and colleagues. In a very accessible and captivating way, Dr Russ Harris made us understand how our mind can sometimes be an enemy to living a rich, vital and meaningful life. The book is full of EFFECTIVE, evidence-based strategies to effectively respond to our distressing emotions, thus reducing their impact on us. It also gives us strategies to disentangle ourselves from self-defeating thoughts. As we are able to free ourselves from the impact of unhelpful thoughts and feelings, we stop figthing them, and can invest our energy in living our life. As I read the book, I realize that life is not about having happy, pleasant thoughts and feelings. It is about living a meaningful life consistent with our values. The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy gives us the needed tools to just do that: FREE ourselves from our MIND and have the energy to live a meaningful life.
The Happiness Trappy is the most accessible, easiest to understand book on ACT therapy. It is the first book I recommend you to read on ACT. And if you become passionate about ACT like me, you can continue with many other fantastic and helpful books on ACT by other authors.
